Homemade Taco Recipe


 Ingredients for Taco Seasoning:

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional for spice)
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Ingredients for Tacos:

  • 1 pound ground beef (or preferred protein: chicken, turkey, or tofu)
  • Taco shells or soft tortillas
  • Taco toppings: Shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, chopped onions, sliced jalapeños, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, lime wedges
  • Cooking oil
  • Optional toppings: Black beans, corn kernels, cilantro, diced avocado

Preparing Taco Seasoning:

  • In a small bowl, mix together chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), dried oregano, paprika, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Set aside.

Cooking the Taco Filling:

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a drizzle of cooking oil.
  • Add the ground beef (or preferred protein) to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula or spoon as it cooks.
  • Once the meat is browned and cooked through, drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Sprinkle the prepared taco seasoning over the cooked meat. Add a splash of water (about 1/4 cup) and stir to combine. Simmer for a few minutes until the flavors meld.

Assembling the Tacos:

  • Warm the taco shells or tortillas according to package instructions.
  • Spoon the seasoned meat into the taco shells or tortillas.
  • Top the tacos with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, chopped onions, sliced jalapeños, and any other preferred toppings.
  • Squeeze fresh lime juice over the tacos for an extra zest (if desired).
